Wigan Group offers the following courses:
This is the name for the Institute of Advanced Motorists examination, preparation for which can be provided by volunteers working at any of the regional Groups (including Wigan Advanced Motorists).
A typical course will run for 8 weeks, starting with an assessment drive and finishing with a practice test.
On all runs you will be accompanied by an Observer who will pass on tips on how to improve your driving skills, beyond the level required to pass the Advanced Test. All types of roads will be covered from busy town centres through winding country roads to dual carriageways and motorways. There are also some manoeuvring skills to be mastered and these will be included in the test.
Your Test at the end of the course will be taken by an IAM Driving Examiner, who holds a Police Advanced Driving Certificate and will be approved as an Examiner by the IAM
An overview of the Advanced Driving Test can be found here.
Again, a typical course will run for 8 weeks, starting with an assessment ride and finishing with a practice test.
On all ride-outs you will be accompanied by an Observer on their own bike. They will pass on tips on how to improve your riding skills, again beyond the level required to pass the Advanced Test. All types of roads will be covered from busy town centres through winding country roads to dual carriageways and motorways.
Your Test at the end of the course will be taken by an IAM Riding Examiner, who holds a Police Advanced Driving Certificate and will be approved as an Examiner by the IAM
On your first visit to the Group, you must bring the following items with you:
Driving licence, including the paper counterpart
Insurance documents
MoT certificate (if your vehicle is over three years old)
Proof of payment (unless you are paying on the day)
You will not be permitted to drive/ride with us until we have had the opportunity to check these documents.
Please note that it is IAM policy not to accompany drivers/riders of vehicles with illegal number-plates, exhaust pipes or visors. We also reserve the right to decline to accompany motorcycle riders wearing unsuitable clothing.
